About My Research

Understanding why biomolecules need water to function is a grand challenge in biophysics. My Ph.D. pioneered using ultrafast lasers to map the first layer of water molecules around proteins and DNA. I discovered the first water layer around proteins and DNA contains molecular information about the structure of the underlying biomacromolecule. My research has afforded new techniques and insights towards understanding water’s roles in biology, including protein-DNA interactions, and provides new perspectives about why life needs water, and how water helped life to begin.
